Chapter 3: GUIDE DUTY, FLAGS, AND THE FORT
GUIDE DUTY GENERAL INFORMATION
Duties of All Posts
Uniform Requirements
All Scouts must leave for duty in the same uniform, must stand duty in identical uniforms, and must return from duty in matching uniforms. For example, if you are wearing a jacket when you go to duty and it gets hot, do not remove your jacket until leadership or an adult comes to collect it. The uniforms must always match.
Rain Procedure
During heavy rain or if lightning is present, the guides at Upper Gun Platform, North Sally and the bottom of South Sally Ramp will take cover. These Scouts will return to their posts when the weather becomes clear. All other posts offer protection so there is no need to leave, unless otherwise notified by the State Park office. If you went to duty without your poncho, someone in Leadership will bring a poncho to you.
- You need to know the time and location of rifle and cannon firings and guided tours. All this information can be found on your duty cards.
- Know where the State Park Office is and how to get there from your post.
- Inform your Patrol Leader of any hazards (broken stairways, windows, places where people trip, exposed nails where someone could get hurt).
- Keep your general area free of litter. Scouts should always pick up litter wherever it is found.
- Know where to purchase tickets: Visitor's Center, kiosk at Avenue entrance to fort, kiosk at South Sally entrance to fort, and kiosk at Biddle House.
- There are 2 types of tickets: 1) Historic Downtown Mackinac (downtown houses and art museum) and 2) Fort Mackinac. Either ticket can be upgraded to include both the fort and downtown houses for an additional charge.
- Know where the restrooms are located in the Fort and downtown.
- FYI: Direct persons needing aid to the Medical Center in town.
- Fire extinguishers are in all buildings. Know their locations. Look behind door or on a wall.
- Notify the nearest State Park employee of any emergency.
