ARCH ROCK
* * * *
DESCRIPTION
Arch Rock is a natural stone arch made of brecciated limestone stretching 50 feet across. It stands 146 feet above Lake Huron.
LEGEND
The Native Americans believed that Gitchi Manitou, The Great Spirit, entered the Island here each day. They also believed it was the doorway through which departed souls entered the Island. They believed that an Indian maiden was tied to the rock by her father, who had forbidden her to marry the warrior of her dreams. The arch was created when her tears melted the stone. The story ends when her warrior rescues her and carrier her off to the land of his people.
DIRECTIONS
The arch can be seen from both the top and the bottom. A stairway connects the two viewing points, from the bluff to the lake.
From the Barracks: Follow the south bicycle path from the back of the barracks to the rock.
From Town: Follow Lake Shore Road toward the marina, past Mission Point.
